Rubbish could power homes – Australia

Hundreds of thousands of tonnes of rubbish otherwise heading for landfill would be used to generate enough electricity for 60,000 homes under a proposal for Kwinana.
Melbourne firm Phoenix Energy has applied to WA’s environmental watchdog for approval to build a $400 million, 60MW waste-to- energy plant in the heart of Perth’s industrial precinct.
The project, backed by prominent WA businesswoman Janet Holmes a Court and Japanese firm Mitsubishi, would reportedly be the first of its kind in Australia.
In papers lodged with the Environmental Protection Authority, Phoenix said the proposal would use about 300,000 tonnes of municipal waste a year to produce electricity.
