Waste Management has announced the expansion of waste-to-energy facility in Des Moines, Iowa.
The company says its Des Moines Metro Methane Recovery Facility at the Metro Park East landfill in Polk County will increase output from 6.4 megawatts to 11.2 megawatts.
The plant is a private-public partnership with the Metro Waste Authority. Electricity produced by the new facility is delivered to the Municipal Energy Agency of Nebraska, a contract secured by Metro Waste Authority.
As part of the expansion, Waste Management says it will add at least three more landfill gas-fuelled generators.
