As Fremantle moved closer to becoming the first Australian council to prohibit the non- biodegradable, lightweight plastic bags found at supermarket checkouts, mayor Brad Pettitt said the cities of Vincent and Nedlands had been “enthusiastic” in early talks about introducing similar laws.
Alternative bags, which were compostable or made of thicker plastic, could be sold for at least 10¢.
