 Govt plans to ban plastic bags – Botswana

The Minister of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism, Tshekedi Khama has indicated that government is planning to ban the use of plastic carrier bags in the country.

The intent of this law was to reduce the use of plastic bags. Either a charge or a fee achieve the same thing. For a charge per bag, let the shops keep the fee is the simplest thing to do. That way there is no admin fees to chase. But you have to make sure they do charge the fee and not let it slide.
A ban is a simpler thing to do. Maybe black marketers will try to get around it, but stores would be heavily fined for handing out bags.
For Rre below. There is talk of biodegradable bags, but in reality there are none. Oxodegradable is bad for the environment as it fragments into little pieces of plastic. If they get buried in landfill, they don’t even do that. Compostable plastic is no good as people don’t have access to compost facilities. By far the best thing to do is stop using the bags. Make people bring reusable bags.
