Australia’s first plastic bag free town, Coles Bay on Tasmania’s east coast, took the step in April 2003. A year later, Birregurra at the foot of the Otway Ranges became Victoria’s first with Cannons Creek in the City of Casey soon after.
Since then a number of other Australian communities have declared themselves plastic bag free, though there doesn’t appear to be a central list. The latest Victorian example is in Mornington Peninsula, where traders and community in Mount Martha and Blairgowrie made a commitment this year to work towards a bag free future.
There seems to be some good state wide initiatives coming into place now to take this to a much larger level. Hopefully this will become reality and put an end to all this pollution and destruction they cause.
