An industry partnership, with support from federal and state governments, the New South Wales-based project by Pact Group started operations in February 2022, producing recycled PET resin from plastic bottles collected through container deposit schemes and household recycling bins.

The plant will divert thousands of tonnes of plastic waste from landfill and means recycled packaging is being manufactured in Australia without the need to import virgin resin.

Sanjay Dayal, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Pact Group, said the Albury facility a game changer for Australia’s plastic recycling industry.

“We are proud to be part of a sustainable solution to divert plastic waste from landfill and ensure we are recycling and manufacturing our drink bottles and food packaging here in Australia without the need to import plastic material from overseas,” Dayal said.

The Albury project was so successful that the same project team has been deployed on two more major plastics recycling projects.

The Circular Plastics Australia (PET) joint venture is constructing another facility, this time in Melbourne, that will also be able to recycle up to 1 billion 600ml PET drink bottles a year.

A real project actually doing REAL recycling of PET plastic Waste in Australia.  Not some repurpose of plastic waste into a base product like roads or concrete, but a project to return raw resin back to a manufacturer so they don’t have to import virgin resin to make their products.
