GreenGenius Biodegradable Plastic Bags had to go out of business
Posted on July 29, 2012 by DrRossH in BioPlastics, Plastic Waste NewsThis is a fine but sad example of the power of big lobbying money to create a law in California that contradicts scientific evidence. The compostable plastic (bioplastic) manufacturers through their ‘efforts’ got a law passed in California to make it illegal to use the word Biodegradable on packaging labels or a product unless it only biodegraded by composting. This company GreenGenius made a range of plastic bags that had a landfill-biodegradable additive in them to allow them to biodegrade in a landfill. They had had independent biodegradation testing done to ASTM standards and showed the bags were biodegradable. Yet the CA legislators ignored all that and shut them down saying they had breached the Biodegradable claim law. Politics and lobbying over science. Where are we heading?
