IT’S a new world for Tasmanian shoppers, who from today must either provide their own bags or pay for biodegradable or reusable bags at checkouts.
The state’s retailers are now banned from supplying shoppers with lightweight, non-biodegradable plastic bags.
Environment Minister Brian Wightman said Tasmanians were prepared for the change and phasing out plastic bags was well supported.
“People have been using reusable bags for years and we have really been pushing to educate shoppers,” he said.
