“We’ve worked hard for years to create policies that put responsibility fully in the hands of producers and consumers and we assess our progress continually to take stock of how we’re doing and what more we can do,” said Terry Lake, B.C.’s Minister of the Environment, in a statement to media about the report card.
Full policy-based involvement by the product’s manufacturer or first importer is what separates extended producer responsibility from product stewardship, which often involves only a government body that could, for example, levy a fine to producers.
