“Bringing back the Recycle & Win program just made sense.” said Fred Battle, Director of Raleigh’s Solid Waste Services Department. “During the first Recycle & Win program, we had a 10% increase in recycling tonnage and a 33% increase in requests for bins during the six month program. As we introduce the new rollout carts to the city of Raleigh, we look to increase our rates and participation and believe the Coca-Cola Recycle & Win program can help with this task.”
Raleigh Mayor Nancy MacFarlane said, “Programs such as ‘Recycle & Win’ promote good environmental stewardship. They encourage recycling participation, which reduces the amount of material destined for landfills. Today, more than ever, it is critical to develop public/private partnerships which help government provide good service and stretch tax dollars. ‘Recycle & Win’ provides the added bonus of helping the City introduce our new larger recycling containers and provides our residents with vital information and tips on proper recycling.”
While 10% increase is better than none, if they introduced a container deposit sheme, they would get a 300% (estimated by PWS) increase in container recycling rates and at the same time it gets people used to making the change to putting used items in their recycle bins.
