Disposable Plastic use is high on Commecial Aircraft
Posted on November 18, 2012 by DrRossH in Plastic Waste NewsHow many times have you been on a long flight and been served a meal and when you looked past the food, you saw all the plasic items that were invovled to get this meal to you, to the person in the seat beside you and the one beside them, to the 10 people in the row in front of you and the 10 in front of that.? You get the picture?
On a Qanta s flight recently we counted these disposable items for the flight and meal.
1) Head phones in a disposable plastic bag
2) The blanket was wrapped in a disposable plastic bag
3) The cutlery was disposable plastic
4) The Cereal came in a disposable plastic bag
5) The cups were plastic disposable items
6) The Orange drink was served in a disposable plastic container
7) They gave me a disposable plastic water bottle
8) The potato salad came in disposable plastic
9) Later in the flight they handed out a snack, in a disposable plastic bag
10) The cheese came with a disposable plastic wrap
11) The crackers came in a disposable plastic wrapping
12) For the breakfast mean, the fruit came in disposable plastic with more plastic cutlery.
Due to international quanatine regulations and to protect the biology of each country, the items used in flight cannot be taken off for recycling. So all this plastic is used once, then dumped for every passenger of every flight for the year. That is a lot of plastic every year that unless it is incinerated, will still be here in 100’s of years time. Just to feed a passenger a meal on a plane flight. Surley the airlines can do better than this?
