Balloon bans aren’t anything new, with at least three Melbourne councils putting a stop to the party decorations before Darebin Council prohibited them.
Darebin, which takes in Northcote, Thornbury and Preston, grabbed the city’s attention after it voted to ban balloons, along with other single-use plastics, on council land this week.
But Port Phillip, Banyule and Monash councils have already passed balloon bans in light of research showing they are polluting waterways and killing wildlife.
