While steel and wood recycling were marginally up, all other materials listed – paper, glass, aluminium and plastics – were marginally down for the year.
The drops come in the same year that the government pushed through ambitious recycling targets for 2017 that include, for instance, a requirement for plastics recycling to grow by 5% every year for the next five years.
Due to its long polluting life, plastic used for disposable purposes such as packaging should have an ‘Environment Care’ surcharge put on it to incentivise manufacturers to seek alternate ways to present their products. At the current time, neither the manufacturers nor the consumers are paying the proper price for plastic. The price has to reflect the manufacture cost as well as the disposal cost.
