According to WRAP’s statistics a total of 8.0 billion ‘thin-gauge’ bags were issued in the UK in 2011, which equates to a 5.4% rise compared with 7.6 billion used in 2010.
However, the figures did reveal a 22% decrease in the number of such bags being used in Wales.
England – which accounts for by far the bulk of the bags used at 6.77 billion in 2011 – showed a 7.5% rise from 6.29 billion in 2012, while Northern Ireland rose 8.1% from 170 million to 190 million
