“A shop keeper in one of the leading retail outlets in the city said, ‘We do not charge for plastic bags.” However, when Yentha drew his attention to the government ordinance which restrains shops from providing carry bags free of cost to customers, the manager replied that he was new to the job and did not know the rules.

“Everybody now stuffs waste in plastic carry bags and throw them on the roads. This will continue till the plastic carry bags and other non- biodegradable materials are prohibited. During the monsoon season these bags will create vector breeding space by choking drains and wetlands,” said Saraswathi from Peroorkada.

A city based Green Activist said that the ordinance would help check the menace caused by plastic bags. “Only a total prohibition will have some effect. A million plastic bags are being used every minute  over the world. The annual global use of plastic bags is estimated to be one trillion. It is time to think about the harmful effects of this human activity.”
